Common Ankle Injuries

The most common ankle injuries won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has been the least bit active. Of course, athletes and amateurs alike are well aware of at least a few of these. So, let’s take a quick look at the most common ankle injuries.

The common ankle injuries come as the result of a number of activities, some of which aren’t even athletic in nature. Before we get into the top ankle injuries, we’ll first go briefly into the work of the ankle itself.

The human ankle, like the rest of the body, performs a number of functions. The ankle has three different joints and several bones. These provide various movements, most notably, up and down and side to side.

Now, let’s take a look at the most common ankle injuries:

  1. 1. Sprain. An ankle sprain is the most common of all injuries. Simply put, a sprain occurs when the ligaments suffer strain and result in an injury known as a sprain. Recovery time can last from a couple of days to two or more weeks.
  2. 2. Ankle fracture. This is a fracture or breaks in one or more of the three bones inside the ankle. The most common of these occur in the tibia or fibula. Recovery times vary but can last for several weeks.
  3. 3. Achilles tendon rupture. When this tendon ruptures, it causes some of the most severe pain. This is generally due to sudden movements but can result from other causes. It’s generally fixed with non-surgical treatments but surgery is sometimes necessary.
