Common Heel Ailments

Like other problems in other areas of the body, heel issues can really cause a lot of discomfort and pain. Most often, heel ailments result from too much stress, which manifests after an injury, being overweight, and other scenarios. Here are the most common heel ailments you should know about:

  • Plantar fasciitis. Perhaps the most common of all, plantar fasciitis typically results in a stabbing pain to the heel. It’s usually most felt in the early morning when you begin to walk. Generally, the pain subsides after becoming mobile but it might return if there’s too much stress on the heel.
  • Hammer’s toe. This is a condition that typically manifests as the result of wearing shoes with tight toe boxes. Typically, it affects the toe next to the big toe, making it painful to ambulate. It can also cause calluses and corns to develop.
  • Calcaneal spur. A calcaneal spur or heel spur is a bony protrusion which forms on the bottom of the foot under the heel bone. It swells and causes pain.
  • Sever’s disease. This condition manifests in children, which causes pain in the heel. It is also known as “calcaneal apophysitis.”
